The Alphas are a breed of human who's brains are slightly more active then normal. This gives them superhuman abilities. Unfortunately for them, these powers come with side effects.
All Alphas have some sort of defect coupled with their abilities that make it it far less of a good thing. For example, Gary is a highly functioning autistic with an ability to process information that rivals most computer; Bill can amp up his "fight or flight" reflex, giving him extraordinary strength for a brief period of time but he has terrible anger management; and Nina is a beautiful woman who can reprogram other people's minds to do as she bids, however she can never have a functional relationship with another human.
After twenty years of fighting crime using their powers, this team of Alphas have developed a safe environment for new Alphas to learn about their abilities.
